Genetic testing

This morning Mike and I sent off our DNA to be screened for genetic disorders. Dr. Peterson made this sound pretty routine for IVF couples, and I feel it should be routine for any couples intending to have a child. Since most genetic disorders are recessive, the disorder doesn't actually show up in the parent, though they can be carriers. The disorder only shows up in the child if both parents are carriers and they pass on the recessive gene to the child. Disorders like cystic fibrosis, fragile X, and spinal muscular atrophy (and many others) are recessive.

Embryos themselves can also be genetically tested, but it's much more expensive and usually not necessary. This testing tests the actual genes of the embryo, not just the parents. This test can identify other disorders that can occur during the normal process of fertilization and growth, like Down Syndrome.

Dr. Peterson's office sent an order to a testing company called Counsyl, and they sent us two small packages for DNA collection. Mike and I each got to fill a small tube with spit, and then we added a bit of preserving solution. The tubes were then sealed and put in pre-paid FedEx envelopes. We'll find out our results in a few weeks.
